SkyDrive and West Nippon Expressway Partner to Explore Air Mobility from Expressway Hubs

SkyDrive Inc. has entered into a strategic partnership with West Nippon Expressway Company to evaluate the potential of advanced air mobility services across Japan’s expressway network. The agreement focuses on studying the feasibility of deploying electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft from highway service and parking areas, transforming them into future mobility hubs.

The collaboration builds on SkyDrive’s ambition to make air travel a practical part of everyday transportation. Following successful demonstration flights of its SD-05 aircraft at Expo 2025 Osaka and in Tokyo earlier this year, the company is targeting commercial operations by 2028. Meanwhile, NEXCO West is pursuing innovation under its “MOVE!2030” strategy, which emphasizes regional development and new business opportunities.

With the use of service areas strategically placed in equal distances between the expressway routes, the two firms seek to develop an array of vertiports that would accommodate short-range flights as well as tourism-oriented air travel.

Apart from its commercial significance, this collaboration also shows how useful such aircraft would be in disaster-prone areas. Air taxis strategically placed in expressway service areas can be rapidly dispatched to conduct damage assessments and develop better plans for emergencies.

SkyDrive is honored and delighted to enter into this partnership with NEXCO West. In developing our aircraft, we are looking to lead this ‘once-in-a-century’ mobility revolution. This new partnership is a meaningful step forward for our business. Combining the expertise in managing road infrastructure delivered by NEXCO West with the easy access to short-hop air travel and sightseeing flights delivered by SkyDrive opens up a new realm of possibilities.”

The next step involves evaluating methods for deployment and determining the best locations where the companies can implement their services going forward. This project also fits in with the broader regional efforts that are taking place, led by the Kansai Economic Federation, in order to leverage the momentum gained from Expo 2025 to adopt next generation technologies.

With continued research, there is a clear indication of convergence emerging between ground infrastructure and airborne mobility solutions.
