Utility Global Pioneers Hydrogen Production from Steel Off-Gases

Utility Global has achieved a significant milestone by producing hydrogen directly from steel blast furnace gas (BFG) emissions in a single reactor step under actual field conditions. This breakthrough leverages the company’s proprietary eXERO™ technology platform, enabling the conversion of BFG and steam into on-site hydrogen without external electricity or additional infrastructure. The H₂Gen™ reactor operates similarly to a Solid Oxide Electrolysis Cell (SOEC) electrolyzer but uniquely functions without external electricity, driven instead by the overpotential between gases on each side of a ceramic membrane.

This process not only produces high-purity hydrogen but also converts feedstock gas into a high-concentration CO₂ stream, facilitating cost-effective carbon capture for various applications.
