Factorial Energy has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with global battery manufacturer SK On to evaluate the future manufacturing and commercialization of solid-state battery technologies. The collaboration combines Factorial’s advanced FEST® solid-state battery technology and scale-up expertise with SK On’s extensive lithium-ion battery manufacturing capabilities and global production network. One of the key areas of interest for the partnership will be to evaluate the capacity of SK On’s manufacturing facility to manufacture the solid-state batteries in a manner that allows for accelerated commercialization of the product. SK On manufactures the electric vehicle batteries for some of the leading automotive firms in the world including Hyundai Motor Group, Ford, Volkswagen, and Ferrari.

It is one of the largest battery makers in the world with more than 200 GWh of manufacturing capacity in a year all around the globe, with 100 GWh of capacity available in the United States alone. Factorial’s industrialization strategy in terms of capital-light industrialization will be leveraged via this partnership by using the manufacturing ecosystem instead of building dedicated facilities. Apart from the electric vehicle market, the advanced solid-state batteries being produced by Factorial will have applications in next generation mobility, aerospace, and hyperscale data centers. “A battery breakthrough only matters if it can be manufactured at scale,” said Siyu Huang, CEO of Factorial. “That is what makes this partnership with SK On so significant.
