Vishay Intertechnology Inc. has unveiled its Automotive Grade optical sensors in an attempt to ensure efficient and accurate communication solutions with respect to the management of batteries and energy storages. Vishay Semiconductors optical sensors which include VCND2040X02, VCND2040SLX02, VCND2045X02, and VCND2045SLX02 have infrared emitter and PIN photodiode incorporated into their miniaturized packages of 4.4 mm x 2.25 mm x 1.9 mm. These optical sensors permit wear-free optical data transmission at the speed of up to 6Mbit/s. This AEC-Q102 approved technology allows communication between battery cells and nodes for battery management and enhanced performance of battery systems. Optical links of such sensors can withstand any EMI/RFI electromagnetic compatibility.

They offer higher safety against cyberattacks compared to wireless RF communications. The VCND2040 series features an infrared emitter single stack with the rise and fall times being 18ns and in case of the VCND2045 series, it is double-stack emitter with rise and fall times of 9ns. The two series enable simultaneous bidirectional communication. Two separate lenses together with the crosstalk barrier ensure that there is no optical interference, and also external optics, such as fiber optic, will help in communicating over several meters even through complicated routes. The RoHS-compliant, halogen-free sensors also meet Vishay Green requirements, with a Moisture Sensitivity Level of 3.
