Kopin Corporation, a leading provider of application-specific optical systems and high-performance microdisplays for defense, training, enterprise, industrial, consumer and medical products, has announced, in collaboration with HMDmd, the first production delivery of the CR3 wearable surgical monitor (purpose-built for surgery) to Carl Zeiss Meditec, a top-tier global medical technology company.
The FDA registered and CE certified CR3 wearable surgical monitor is a cutting-edge head-mounted display (HMD) system developed over several years by HMDmd and Kopin. The lightweight, ergonomic design delivers 3-D imagery in full HD resolution and offers benefits for surgeons performing microsurgery, minimally invasive surgery, digital and robotic surgery and interventional medicine. By simply glancing at the head-worn display, surgeons can view live video feeds from surgical instruments and diagnostic images, eliminating the need to repeatedly move their head between a conventional wall or boom mounted monitor and the patient, enabling surgeons to operate with much greater physical comfort.
“Kopin is proud to manufacture a cutting-edge display and optical solution to integrate with the state-of-the-art operating microscopes of Carl Zeiss Meditec, supporting their commitment to precision and innovation,” said Bill Maffucci, SVP Business Development & Strategy. “We believe our advanced display technologies will help drive the next generation of surgical systems, furthering excellence in future microsurgery applications.”

The production of medical-grade head-mounted display systems at Kopin requires rigorous standards for safety, reliability and compliance. This process involves selecting advanced optical and electronic components, implementing superior manufacturing practices, and enforcing strict quality control measures, ensuring a seamless integration into surgical and medical applications.
“The initial delivery of production line devices to Carl Zeiss Meditec marks a significant milestone in our development program, demonstrating considerable progress in both surgical technology and professional adoption,” said John Lyon, CEO, HMDmd. “Kopin and HMDmd will continue to partner and support the evolution of wearable display technology for leading surgical systems companies such as Zeiss.”
