ZEISS and LG Chem Partner to Advance Photopolymer Supply for Optics

ZEISS, a leader in optics and photonics, teamed up with LG Chem, known for advanced materials. They announced a partnership. Together, they will create sustainable, high-quality photopolymer films on a large scale. This partnership marks a big step for the optical and automotive industries. These films are essential for ZEISS Holographic Windshield Displays (HWD). They represent the next generation of clear display technology for vehicles.

Under the agreement, LG Chem will supply advanced photopolymer films within the ZEISS Microoptics Enabling Ecosystem, supporting the integration of HWD functionality directly into automotive windshields. The companies plan to achieve serial production for automotive OEMs with a start of production (SOP) targeted for 2029.

The signing ceremony took place at LG Chem’s Yeouido Twin Towers, with key representatives from both organizations in attendance, including Stephan Höfer, SVP and Head of Business Development and Marketing at ZEISS Microoptics, Dr. Viktor Schütz, VP and Head of Partnership Management at ZEISS, and Ko Kyung-deok, Vice President and Head of the Electronics Materials Business Unit at LG Chem.

Together, ZEISS and LG Chem are combining their technological expertise and industrial capabilities to establish a stable, scalable supply chain for the emerging “Holography” industry. This alliance ensures that critical materials for applications in mobility, holographic sensor systems, and consumer technologies remain consistently available – even during periods of market fluctuation. Through coordinated supply chain integration and inventory management, both partners are helping automotive OEMs maintain current production programs while preparing for future global rollout of holographic display technologies.

In the automotive sector, photopolymers are key for Holographic Windshield Displays (HWD). This system turns the windshield into a clear digital screen. HWD technology displays important data, navigation details, and entertainment directly on the windshield. This gives drivers and passengers a tailored, immersive experience. This next-gen system boosts safety, comfort, and engagement. Its multi-display feature puts digital info right in the driver’s view.
