Vertiv Acquires Strategic Thermal Labs to Enhance Liquid-Cooling Technology

Vertiv, an international player in critical digital infrastructure and continuity services, has acquired Strategic Thermal Labs LLC (STL), a provider of cutting-edge liquid cooling systems. This move represents a major step forward in improving Vertiv’s thermal management range by augmenting engineering know-how in the key area of integration between server-based liquid cooling and facility-based infrastructure, which is an essential element of any successful AI and HPC deployment.

The Importance of Optimizing the Contemporary Thermal Chain

With compute needs becoming increasingly demanding today, the interaction between server-level cooling and underlying infrastructure is what determines performance. Matters such as flow rate, fluid dynamics, control system characteristics, maintenance, and reliability have emerged as top priorities.

By integrating STL’s proven expertise in cold-plate design and high-density thermal validation, Vertiv is better positioned to simulate and emulate the real-world conditions of high-density compute environments. This acquisition enables Vertiv to bridge the gap between the thermal chain and the power train, providing customers with comprehensive support across design, integration, commissioning, and ongoing lifecycle operations.

“As AI and high‑performance computing push power densities to unprecedented levels, understanding and solving heat challenges at the chip level becomes critical to system design, performance and reliability,” said Scott Armul, chief product and technology officer at Vertiv. “STL brings deep expertise and proven capability in addressing some of the industry’s most demanding chip-level density and thermal problems, strengthening Vertiv’s ability to emulate and validate system-level solutions and enabling customers to improve performance and lifecycle outcomes in liquid-cooled environments.”

Commitment to Openness and Interoperability

Vertiv emphasized that this acquisition further demonstrates the company’s commitment to building an open ecosystem. Vertiv is determined to provide infrastructure that is agnostic about the servers and silicon used, thus ensuring that Vertiv’s liquid cooling technologies are compatible with multiple vendors’ computing systems.

The move is consistent with Vertiv’s overarching mission of simplifying the complexity of infrastructure for customers through comprehensive integration in areas like power, thermal, intelligence, and lifecycle services.
