Advanced Energy Unveils High-Efficiency 800 V DC Converters to Power AI Data Centers

Advanced Energy Industries showed off their new ADH series of DC-DC converters. These babies are built for handling 800 VDC power systems, a big move for making AI server racks super efficient. With the boost to 800 VDC, data centers can manage more power easier and better.

Giant leaps in AI mean servers need way more juice than ever before. Traditional 48V systems just can’t keep up. Going to 800 VDC cuts those pesky copper losses, makes wiring simpler, and sends energy zipping through the whole cluster much faster.

Advanced Energy’s new ADH series steps down an 800 VDC input directly to a stabilized 50 VDC output. Operating at multi-MHz switching frequencies, the converters achieve a peak power efficiency of 98.2%, providing a core infrastructure block that converts high-voltage direct current into usable server power while preventing thermal overhead.

Compact Half-Brick Package with Advanced Thermal Management

The ADH series squeezes massive power into a small package-specifically, a half-brick size. It puts out an impressive 8 kW for brief peaks and can continuously handle 6 kW. Plus, it tops industry density scores at over 2,700 W/in³ for peaks and more than 2,000 W/in³ normally.

This series is great for cutting-edge cooling too, pairing smoothly with liquid-cooled setups in servers. Engineers will love how its modules connect; they’re made for spreading power across growing tech loads. So it keeps pace with increasing computing needs.

High-Voltage Safety Foundations: Incorporates safety-critical galvanic insulation barriers required to isolate hazardous primary input lines from low-voltage logic components.

“The data center industry’s shift to 800 V DC power architecture requires a new wave of innovation to deliver highly optimized power for next-generation AI servers,” said David Richmond, Advanced Energy’s senior vice president of high-volume products. “Working in close collaboration with several leading customers, we have developed and delivered samples of the ADH converters and plan to expand the portfolio with additional power levels and form factors. Advanced Energy is advancing a comprehensive portfolio of 800 V DC power conversion solutions designed to meet the critical demands of this emerging power paradigm.”

A Complete Grid-to-Silicon Power Ecosystem

To provide a complete, drop-in 800 VDC power subsystem, Advanced Energy designs the ADH series to work alongside its broader power management portfolio.

By combining the ADH converters with the NDQ series of non-isolated bus converters (NIBC)-which step down power from 50 VDC to 12 VDC-and the newly introduced Hot Swap Control (HSC) module, operators gain a unified power chain. The integrated HSC module manages severe inrush currents during initial system boot and adds robust overcurrent protection, delivering the reliability needed to operate megawatt-scale AI server deployments safely.
