Toshiba Unveils Photovoltaic-Output Photocoupler for Vehicles

Toshiba Electronic Devices & Storage Corporation has introduced its latest photovoltaic-output photocoupler, TLX9920, designed specifically for solid-state relay (SSR) applications in automotive systems. The new device is offered in a compact SO6L package with extended creepage distance, with volume shipments commencing immediately.

Meeting Growing Demand for Solid-State Relays in Automotive Systems

As automotive systems become more electrified and reliable, the demand for relay solutions that last longer is also increasing.

This is causing the switch from mechanical relays, which have wearing parts and need occasional maintenance, to solid-state relays.

The TLX9920 is designed to be a gate driver for high-voltage power MOSFETs in SSR configurations. Together with suitable MOSFETs, it supports high-voltage and high-current switching, thereby giving better results than typical photorelays.

Since SSRs do not have physical contacts, they do not suffer from contact wear and thus their maintenance requirements are greatly reduced. These are the major advantages that make SSRs a very attractive option for the latest automotive and industrial systems.

Perfect for High Voltage, Isolation and Reliability

The TLX9920 comes in an SO6L package with a creepage distance of more than 8mm, thus providing high isolation performance with the capability to withstand a voltage of 5000Vrms (BVs).

Such a design ensures the device can operate safely even in challenging high-voltage environments.

The product is also in line with major international and automotive standards, such as:

In fact, the TLX9920 goes beyond these requirements, making it a good match for high-voltage and severe operating conditions.

Wide Usage in Automotive and Industrial Systems

The TLX9920 can be used in various types of switching applications, for example:

Automotive electronic systems

Energy Storage Systems (ESS)

Industrial power equipment

Due to its strong design, it is also very suitable for highly reliable environments that require electrical isolation and long operating time.

Driving Innovation in Power Electronics

Through the launch of the TLX9920, Toshiba is further enlarging its range of state-of-the-art semiconductor products that help upgrade system performance and lifetime. The company is devoted to aiding next-generation automotive and industrial technologies by inventing safety, efficiency, and sustainability enhancing features.
