Ouster and Benchmark Electronics Expand Manufacturing Partnership for New Rev8 Native Color Lidar Sensors

Ouster, a leading innovator in high-performance sensing and perception technologies for Physical AI, and Benchmark Electronics, a prominent global provider of comprehensive manufacturing, engineering, and technology lifecycle services, announced a major multi-year expansion of their strategic manufacturing alliance.

The expanded cooperation is structured to anchor and scale the high-volume commercial production of Ouster’s recently unveiled Rev8 OS digital lidar sensor family, satisfying accelerating demand across the industrial, robotics, automotive, and smart infrastructure markets.

Industrializing the World’s First Native Color Lidar

The announcement arrives as the automation industry shifts toward Physical AI—intelligent systems that must accurately perceive, reason about, and navigate complex real-world environments. Historically, robotic perception stacks required separate, decoupled sub-assemblies: a 3D lidar unit to map physical structure alongside secondary optical cameras to capture color data. Merging these distinct data streams required complex software interpolation, often introducing spatial calibration errors, added processing latency, and synchronization blind spots.

Ouster’s breakthrough Rev8 family collapses this architectural complexity. Powered by the proprietary L4 Ouster Silicon co-developed with Fujifilm, each data point within the 3D point cloud natively captures and carries exact color information at the hardware level during the instant of capture. This eliminates post-processing software stitching, providing machines with high-fidelity, human-like sight capable of interpreting traffic signals, tracking brake lights, and rendering survey-grade colorized maps under extreme lighting variations.

“Benchmark is proud of our long-standing partnership with Ouster and the role we have played in supporting Ouster’s many innovations. Rev8 is a prime example of their ability to push the boundaries of what’s possible in sensing technology,” said David Moezidis, President and Chief Executive Officer at Benchmark. “Our team is uniquely equipped to scale the complex microelectronics and automated optical assembly required for this groundbreaking technology. We are proud to continue our journey with Ouster, providing a secure, reliable foundation for the next era of Physical AI.”

Automated Precision Assembly and Rigorous Safety Metrics

To smoothly transition this advanced silicon architecture from prototype validation into mass market adoption, Benchmark has deployed a highly automated, dedicated production framework. The assembly flow integrates precise microelectronics positioning and advanced sub-micron optical alignment systems, engineered specifically to manage the ruggedized, dense architecture of the Rev8 series.

The synchronized production pipeline ensures that the entire Rev8 OS lineup—comprising the ultra-wide OS0, versatile mid-range OS1, hemispherical OSDome, and the new 256-channel flagship OS1 Max—conforms to the most stringent international structural, compliance, and safety standards:

  • Functional Safety: Architected for hardware-level safety, meeting ASIL-B (ISO 26262), SIL-2 (IEC 61508), and PLd (ISO 13849) frameworks, complete with an on-sensor 3D Zone Monitor.

  • Cybersecurity Protocols: Designed from the ground up to comply with ISO 21434 data boundaries, protecting edge hardware against unauthorized digital access or firmware tampering.

  • Environmental Hardening: Built to perform reliably under mechanical stress, surviving up to 100 g of shock impact and continuous 10 G-rms mechanical vibration across an operational temperature window of -40°C to +85°C.

Engineered for Affordability, Resiliency, and Global Scalability

The commercial structure of the expanded agreement underscores Ouster’s focus on long-term program stability and predictable unit pricing for major original equipment manufacturers (OEMs):

  • Massive Volume Capacity: Benchmark‘s dedicated production footprint yields a mature, active manufacturing capacity exceeding 100,000 digital lidar units annually, offering global enterprise customers a resilient, securely managed hardware supply line.

  • Ten-Year Lifecycle Commitment: To back long-term capital deployments and commercial fleet initiatives, the manufacturing framework commits to a planned 10-year production lifespan for the Rev8 family, ensuring component longevity and multi-year hardware consistency.

  • Multi-Site Regional Flexibility: While initial Rev8 manufacturing leverages Benchmark’s primary advanced optics facility, the company’s broader operational network encompasses 20 automated facilities distributed across eight nations, including heavy manufacturing footprints in both the United States and Europe. This standardized global production web allows Ouster to scale capacity across multi-site production loops to satisfy fluid regional logistical and regulatory demands.

Benchmark has been a foundational partner in Ouster’s growth story and the natural fit to scale manufacturing for our breakthrough Rev8 sensors,” said Darien Spencer, Chief Operating Officer at Ouster. “Through our well-honed supply chain ecosystem, our customers can be confident in our ability to reliably deliver the most advanced, cybersecure, and functionally safe native color lidar sensors at high volume to support their long-term programs.”
