ANSI Launches Hydrogen Standards Coordination Initiative

The American National Standards Institute has set up its Hydrogen Standards Coordination Initiative, which promotes the advancement of safety/technical standards along the entire value chain from production through storage, transportation, carbon capture facilities, etc., as hydrogen begins to make significant strides as the foundation of clean transport, power generation, and large-scale energy storage. The initiative covers the growing needs of safe, efficient, and reliable standards as hydrogen use continues to increase, extending beyond its traditional role in the refinery, chemicals, and metal industries. Phase I will consist of creating heightened awareness through its comprehensive Hydrogen Standards Landscape database, a series of educational webinars with guest speakers from the developers of standards/code officials, as well as a Request for Information to collect input from the industry on existing standards and current activities.

Phase II, scheduled to begin in the spring of 2026, consists of a technical workshop, which will build an executive report outlining the gaps, the regulatory picture, and the areas needing additional research. “As hydrogen emerges as a cornerstone of America’s clean energy future, robust standardization is essential for safety, interoperability, and commercial viability,” said Dr. Laurie E. Locascio, ANSI president and CEO. “We’re calling on standards developers, industry innovators, and government partners to contribute their expertise and help shape the industry for decades to come.”
