Kratos Completes First EPOCH® Test with Airbus Satellite

Kratos Defense & Security Solutions, a technology company serving Defense, National Security, and global markets, announced the successful completion of factory acceptance testing (FAT) for the integration of its EPOCH Command and Control (C2) software with Airbus’ OneSat next-generation software-defined satellite platform.

Airbus’ OneSat platform represents a significant evolution from traditional fixed-function satellites, delivering dynamic, in-orbit reconfiguration that enables greater operational agility and mission adaptability. While these capabilities unlock new performance potential, they also introduce added complexity for ground control systems responsible for managing highly flexible space assets.

To meet these requirements, Kratos enhanced a recent release of its EPOCH C2 software with new capabilities designed specifically to support the dynamic architecture of the OneSat platform. These enhancements enable seamless coordination with OneSat’s frequent configuration changes, continuous updates, and increased onboard autonomy inherent to software-defined spacecraft.

“This successful milestone reflects the close collaboration we’ve established with Airbus in developing software-defined space capabilities,” said Maurizio Scotta, President of Kratos Communications. “The flexibility of our EPOCH command and control system design and the experience of our personnel allows us to work with Airbus to unlock the full potential of the OneSat Platform – enabling greater flexibility, faster reconfiguration, and smarter operations for our mutual customers.”

The factory acceptance testing validated the interoperability of Kratos’ EPOCH C2 system with the Airbus OneSat platform. Both engineering teams confirmed that the EPOCH system worked well during testing. The hardware and software communicated effectively with a simulated satellite environment. They also met all safety, reliability, and redundancy standards. Airbus accepted the system after all mission scenarios were completed. This confirmed it was ready for delivery and operational use.

Elodie Viau, Senior Vice President of Telecommunication and Navigation for Airbus Defence and Space said, “This achievement gives us full confidence in the reliability and performance of the EPOCH system that will operate our satellites in orbit. It’s an important step forward as we prepare for launch and continue delivering innovative software-defined satellites to our customers.”

With over 20 years of experience, Kratos leads in satellite command and control systems. They are constantly improving ground segment technologies. This helps meet the changing needs of software-defined satellites. Kratos has broadened its portfolio beyond command and control. It now has advanced ground tools for traffic planning, resource management, and performance tracking. This expansion boosts mission efficiency and enhances operational intelligence for next-generation satellite systems.
