PCS Software Unveils Cortex AI: Built-in Intelligence to Automate Freight Operations

PCS Software, the all-in-one Transportation Management System trusted by over 1,000 carriers, brokers, and shippers, announced Cortex—an AI engine fully embedded in PCS TMS to help fleets operate faster, smarter, and with less manual effort. Cortex will debut at the Houston PCS Customer Summit on September 25.

Cortex delivers on the promised potential of AI for the transportation industry—turning data into decisions, surfacing valuable insights, streamlining communications, and enhancing key workflows across the entire operation.

“Our AI strategy is grounded in 25+ years of operational expertise, deep customer insight, and an unmatched understanding of the workflows of carriers, brokers, and shippers—all built into the PCS TMS,” said Mark Hill, CEO of PCS. “We’ve focused on AI that matters—tools that improve margins, automate busywork, and give fleets that rely on PCS a true competitive edge.”

Built for Freight, Not Hype

Unlike standalone AI tools or external overlays, Cortex is embedded into the PCS TMS—working seamlessly across dispatch, planning, safety, maintenance, driver management, and back-office workflows.

Analysis and inference are at the core of Cortex, which applies AI across four key areas of the TMS:

  • Optimization – There are many opportunities across the TMS where AI, and specifically ML, can help solve for a best-case scenario. Cortex AI brings this optimization to the most data-intensive and decision-laden areas of the TMS, such as dispatch, scheduling, opportunity management, and maintenance.
  • Workflow – PCS TMS is rich with virtually every workflow needed to run and manage freight, operate a fleet, interact with drivers, and manage the financial aspects of the firm. Cortex AI is having a dramatic effect on shortening workflows, allowing teams to operate more efficiently and handle more tasks in a shorter time.
  • Communication – Cortex AI will allow PCS customers to manage all communication—whether via email, text, voice, or electronic interfaces such as EDI or API—with the help of AI.
  • Insights – With over 25 years of insights from our customers, Cortex AI is poised to surface the right insights at the right time, to the right people, to ensure decisions are correct, profitable, and operationally sound.

These enhancements will result in faster, more confident decisions and operations across our customers’ companies, with significant time savings across roles and activities.

“We leaned into AI early—not for hype, but for real results,” said Danielle Villegas, Chief Product Officer at PCS. “Cortex isn’t just an add-on or an experiment, it’s a competitive weapon that helps fleets do more with less.”

Coming This Fall: First Cortex Modules

While full details are being held for the PCS Customer Summit, the first Cortex-powered capabilities will focus on intelligent dispatch, routing, and scheduling workflows—giving dispatchers and decision-makers new tools to seize opportunities and drive-up profitability in this volatile freight market.

“With Cortex, PCS is giving us enterprise-level tech that used to only be for the giants — and making it work for fleets like ours,” said Tim Reilly, Vice President at Voyager Express, a PCS beta customer.
