CPS Energy Partners with Anterix on 900 MHz Network

CPS Energy and Anterix have announced a spectrum purchase agreement. This deal will let CPS Energy build a vital 900 MHz private wireless broadband network. It’s a big step in modernizing communications for the utility company. The agreement will support CPS Energy’s efforts to upgrade its electric and gas infrastructure.

With the availability of Anterix’s 900 MHz broadband spectrum, CPS Energy will be able to implement a dedicated private wireless network tailored to the needs of the ever-more complex energy infrastructure of today and tomorrow. The network will provide the advanced field automation, outage detection and restoration, situational awareness, and reliable communication platform necessary for the safe integration of new technologies on the grid.

This agreement places CPS Energy among many utilities investing in carrier-grade communications infrastructure. This acquisition gives eight utilities access to 900 MHz private wireless broadband in 15 states. This marks a national shift toward secure, utility-managed networks. These networks offer the coverage, performance, and reliability needed for critical infrastructure. This acquisition marks a key milestone in the AnterixAccelerator™ funding program. CPS Energy is the first utility to advance through this program. This progress activates Anterix’s duty to speed up the use of private wireless broadband networks for utilities nationwide.

CPS Energy is the largest community-owned electricity and natural gas provider in the U.S. It serves more than 970,000 electric customers and 390,000 natural gas customers in San Antonio. This transaction further expands the scale and momentum of 900 MHz private wireless broadband adoption in Texas. Along with other Anterix utility partners, over 93% of Texas counties will now have 900 MHz private wireless networks. This will improve interoperability, ensure consistent performance across service areas, and enhance coordinated response efforts. The expanding footprint strengthens shared resilience, local operational control, and delivers a more secure, reliable, and future-ready electric grid for communities statewide.

“CPS Energy’s investment in 900 MHz private wireless broadband spectrum underscores what we are seeing across the industry: utilities are choosing communications networks they can own, secure, and evolve—because the grid can’t wait,” said Anterix President & CEO Scott Lang. “With Texas as a banner state for utility-led 900 MHz private networks, CPS Energy can tap into a ‘network of networks,’ collaborating with fellow Anterix utility partners like Oncor, LCRA and Xcel Energy to deliver measurable benefits to customers, including enhanced reliability, safer operations, and the ability to fully harness advanced energy technologies as the grid evolves.”

“CPS Energy is committed to grid innovation to enhance resiliency and reliability. This investment in grid connectivity and modernization is key to our operational evolution, which will help us better serve our customers,” said CPS Energy President & CEO Rudy D. Garza.

“As part of our Evolve strategy, CPS Energy is committed to digitally transforming operations, modernizing IT systems, and strengthening grid management. This investment will improve field communications and provide enhanced reliability during major weather. The private wireless network that we intend to deploy with the purchase of Anterix’s 900 MHz broadband spectrum will be a critical part of modernizing our operations while mitigating risk,” said CPS Energy Chief Information Officer Evan O’Mahoney.
