Eaton, the intelligent power management company, announced the launch of its next generation fuel tank isolation valve (FTIV) for hybrid vehicles. The new FTIV is easier to install than its predecessor, is 27% lighter, 39% smaller and has 24% fewer components.
The fuel engine of a hybrid vehicle cannot operate continuously. Therefore, hybrid fuel systems require special measures to address the evaporative emissions that accumulate when the engine is not running.
Christy Roadknight, business unit director of Eaton’s Vehicles and Vehicle Electrification Group, said: “When the vehicle is in electric mode, the volatilization of oil vapor in the fuel tank will create pressure, so the pressure must be released. At the same time, when refueling, you need to ensure that the fuel tank has been depressurized to avoid Fuel spills out. Modern hybrids spend more time in electric mode, so FTIV is even more important now.”
The launch of Eaton’s new generation FTIV comes at a time when hybrid vehicles are becoming a popular alternative to pure electric vehicles. As new hybrid vehicles enter the market, Eaton’s isolation valves can reduce assembly challenges by reducing their size.
Eaton engineers were able to reduce the size of the FTIV by 39% while reducing the amount of copper used by improving the magnetic force generated by the isolation valve. Additionally, the new generation FTIV design is easier to install in a variety of challenging tank configurations within vehicles.

Roadknight said: “We optimized the geometry of the existing components and ensured that the new and improved design maintained the reliability of the original product. This market is growing and we have been in this area for 13 years. ”
Eaton has reached an agreement to supply the next-generation FTIV to two global automotive customers and has already attracted interest from other automakers.
