Can-Am By BPR Unveils New Gen Defender, Engineered to Outperform

Can-Am, the iconic brand of BRP introduced the next generation of its Can-Am Defender, redefining what utility and recreational side-by-sides can deliver.

Long trusted by farmers, ranchers, and outdoor enthusiasts around the world, the Defender has built a reputation as a reliable workhorse that seamlessly transitions from the job site to the trail. For 2026, Can-Am has completely reimagined the Defender, equipping it with greater power, smarter technology, and rugged durability-further cementing its place as one of the most versatile and dependable side-by-sides in the market.

“At Can-Am, we know that the clock never stops for the farmers, ranchers and builders around the world,” said Julie Tourville, Director, Global Marketing, Can-Am Off-Road at BRP. “This new Defender platform is built to prove it and match the unstoppable spirit of our hardworking customers. From managing farmland, to running a job site, or escaping to the backcountry, the new generation Defender is all about bringing true value to our riders with practical and best-in-class features, industry-leading technology and reliable performance that they can count on to help them get the job done and beyond.”

Powertrain: Built for Work and Play

At the heart of the redesigned Defender is the all-new HD11 Rotax ACE 999cc inline three-cylinder engine, delivering 95 horsepower and 70 lb-ft of torque. This powerplant is paired with a newly engineered continuously variable transmission (CVT) and pDrive primary clutch, offering smoother low-speed control, more precise power delivery, and enhanced reliability.

Drivers can also switch between three selectable drive modes—Normal, Work, and Sport—to optimize performance whether towing heavy equipment, navigating tough terrain, or enjoying recreational rides.

To support this power upgrade, the Defender features a redesigned air intake system for improved airflow and a robust cooling system that not only maintains engine temperature but also enhances HVAC performance in cab-equipped models.

For traction, the 2026 Defender XT packages feature a new Quick-4Lok auto-locking front differential, while the Limited, Lone Star, and X mr models come standard with Smart-Lok, an electronically controlled system that adapts automatically to maximize grip in changing conditions.

Riders will also benefit from the Defender’s class-leading utility credentials, including best-in-class payload, towing, and cargo capacity, now supported by a larger 11.9-gallon fuel tank for longer, uninterrupted workdays and adventures.

Suspension and Chassis: Stronger, Smarter, and More Capable

Complementing the new powertrain, the 2026 Defender debuts a redesigned chassis and suspension system engineered for both heavy-duty work and rugged recreational use.

The platform now features a 65-inch-wide stance with 50% larger arched double A-arms, paired with reinforced suspension and steering components. Industry-first double-bonded bushings reduce maintenance needs while ensuring a quieter, smoother ride.

The strengthened chassis includes upgraded ROPS protection, giving riders greater peace of mind when operating in the toughest environments. Handling is also sharper and more stable, even under heavy load, thanks to suspension tuned for confidence and control.
