GitHub Universe 2026: How AI Agents Are Changing the Way Software Gets Built

AI coding tools are changing how developers write software. The next challenge is managing systems that can plan tasks, use tools, and take on more work across the software development lifecycle. That shift raises practical questions about productivity, security, code quality, and how much control developers should retain.

GitHub Universe 2026, taking place on October 28–29 at Fort Mason Center in San Francisco, California, will bring developers, open-source maintainers, and technology leaders together to explore what comes next for software development. The event will be available both in person and virtually.

From AI-Assisted Coding to Agentic Workflows

This year’s central theme is the changing relationship between developers and AI agents. As AI moves beyond code suggestions towards executing multi-step tasks, engineering teams must rethink how they build, review, secure, and ship software.

The conference will feature product announcements, live demonstrations, breakout sessions, and hands-on workshops. Attendees will have opportunities to explore GitHub’s latest capabilities and see how emerging tools translate into practical development workflows.

Security and governance are also important considerations as AI takes on more responsibility. Organizations need ways to manage agent access, maintain code quality, and ensure faster development does not introduce unnecessary risk. For enterprise engineering leaders, the challenge is finding the right balance between autonomy and oversight.

GitHub Universe will also introduce Ship & Tell lightning talks and deeper hands-on workshops, giving builders more opportunities to share practical experiences and develop new skills. The broader program connects technical learning with collaboration across the developer ecosystem.

Developers and AI Community Leaders on the Lineup

The announced speaker lineup includes Angie Jones of the Agentic AI Foundation, John Maeda of Microsoft, Cameron Hamilton of Alliance AI, and Franck Nijhof of the Open Home Foundation. Their participation brings perspectives from the AI ecosystem, technology, and open-source communities.

Also featured are Jenny Patchen of Levi Strauss & Co., Julio Arruda of GFT Technologies, Bea Mendez Gandica of Nuevo Foundation, and Kent C. Dodds of kody.codes.
