GlobalFoundries Advances Dresden Semiconductor Expansion and Announces FDX Fusion Platform

GlobalFoundries (GF) has celebrated the topping-out of its €1.1 billion SPRINT expansion project in Dresden, Germany, and at the same time unveiling FDX Fusion, a new platform of semiconductors that would help create efficient chips capable of handling Physical AI applications. It is estimated that the expanded facility will be able to produce over one million 300mm wafers annually by the end of 2028 and make Dresden the biggest foundry center in Europe. “Europe’s industrial base depends on chips that have to be available, trusted and built close to the customers who rely on them,” said Tim Breen, CEO of GlobalFoundries.” SPRINT expands that capacity in Dresden while giving customers a path to the next generation of energy-efficient computing for Physical AI. This reinforces GF’s role as a trusted partner in the industries that matter most to Europe.”

The construction milestone was completed on schedule and within budget, allowing work to continue while the existing facility remains operational. GF also plans to develop and manufacture FDX Fusion in Dresden. Based on its next-generation fully depleted silicon-on-insulator technology, the platform targets 7nm-like digital performance alongside analog, mixed-signal, embedded-memory and high-performance radio-frequency capabilities. It aims to integrate energy-efficient processing, sensing, real-time control and secure connectivity, strengthening Europe’s semiconductor manufacturing capacity and supply-chain resilience.
