BAE Systems Secures $16 Million Funding for Radiation-Hardened 45nm Technology

BAE Systems has received $16 million in Defense Production Act Title III funding through the Department of War’s Warfighting Investments, Resourcing, and Execution directorate to demonstrate and qualify its radiation-hardened 45 nanometer (nm) technology. The investment will support the reestablishment of BAE Systems’ RH45® ASIC Storefront, manufactured using GlobalFoundries’ 45nm silicon-on-insulator (SOI) technology at its facility in Malta, New York. The platform provides space customers with qualified building blocks and industry-standard design tools for developing application-specific integrated circuits (ASICs) designed to withstand demanding radiation environments. RH45 technology supports military, civil and commercial missions spanning planetary exploration, communications, national security, surveillance and weather operations, while strengthening the domestic supply chain for radiation-hardened microelectronics.

“Design flexibility is important when it comes to supporting space missions,” said Joe Dziezynski, Space Systems product line director at BAE Systems. “Our RH45 ASIC library is a unique and trusted capability that allows our customers to target specific functions while meeting radiation-hardened requirements. These integrated circuits are the heart of computers whose advanced processing powering cannot fail when carrying out critical objectives in the challenging space environment.” GlobalFoundries is supporting the effort with U.S.-manufactured semiconductor technology and supply continuity for defense applications. RH45 technology will also be integrated into single-board computers, including BAE Systems’ Endura™ SBC, targeting improved size, processing performance, power efficiency and security for space systems.
