Textron Aviation and Merlin Unveil Cessna SkyCourier UX Concept for Autonomous Military Logistics

Textron Aviation Inc., a Textron Inc. company, and Merlin, Inc. have revealed the Cessna SkyCourier UX™ concept aircraft, combining Textron Aviation’s twin-turboprop Cessna SkyCourier platform with Merlin’s autonomous flight software.

Unveiled at the Air & Space Forces Association’s Air, Space & Cyber Conference, the autonomous concept is engineered to address military supply chain challenges across distributed, high-risk operational environments where traditional logistical routes are compromised, vulnerable, or unavailable.

Addressing Modern Battlefield Supply Vulnerabilities

Worldwide military forces have started to reconsider supply chain models, mainly for units going on offensive missions which may no longer have the luxury of being close to logistics centers, and have limited access to supplies. The SkyCourier UX meets the need of durable last mile delivery and military planners are being offered this medium size tactical plane which serves the requirement between a tiny autonomous drone and a big strategic aircraft.

Key operational capabilities of the SkyCourier UX concept include:

Unpaved and Short-Runway Operations: Engineered for takeoff and landing on austere, unpaved airfields to reach remote expeditionary units.

Significant Payload Capacity: Designed to carry approximately 6,000 pounds of payload or up to three LD3 standardized cargo containers.

Redesigned Crewless Airframe Architecture: Features a forward-access design concept that replaces the traditional cockpit with additional cargo volume and a nose-opening access hatch for rapid loading.

Dual-Use Mission Versatility: Suited for hub-to-spoke distribution, island-hopping supply missions, emergency medical transport, and critical spare parts delivery.

Leveraged Production Infrastructure: Built upon an established, FAA-certified aircraft platform, ensuring rapid scalability, existing global supply chain support, and lower life-cycle maintenance costs.

This concept combines that technology with a proven platform, the Cessna SkyCourier, to explore what an aircraft designed around autonomy and cargo, rather than a crew, could look like. Solving today’s logistical challenges in conflict zones requires autonomous technology and an aircraft platform with proven capabilities.”

Advancing Autonomous Flight and Modular Logistics

Merlin is still conducting engineering research and development in collaboration with the unscrewed and remotely piloted flight profile, among other areas, like autonomous refueling and remote pilot intervention. Automatization of transport standard assets allows defense planners not only to keep air mobility units of crewed helicopters for major missions but also to ensure uninterrupted logistic support in hostile areas.
