Itron Partners with Ausgrid to Advance Consumer Energy Resource Management

Itron has furthered its long-term partnership with Ausgrid to utilize its IntelliFLEX Low Voltage Distributed Energy Resource Management System (LV DERMS) to improve management of the increasing number of consumer energy resources (CERs), such as rooftop solar, battery storage, and electric vehicle charging, in New South Wales, Australia. With almost one million homes and businesses in the state utilizing rooftop solar, this increase in distributed energy generation is causing issues for the grid, such as minimum system load problems and stability issues. To resolve these problems, as well as comply with the NSW Emergency Backstop Mechanism, which requires solar generation to be controlled in emergency situations, Ausgrid will utilize IntelliFLEX LV DERMS to monitor and manage distributed energy resources in real-time.

The solution will improve situational awareness of low-voltage networks, allowing for better identification of constraints, as well as monitoring and responding to changing situations in real-time. “Building on more than 15-years of collaboration with Ausgrid, which initially included the deployment of Itron’s IEE Meter Data Management System, this project reinforces our shared commitment to advanced low voltage visibility,” said Don Reeves, Itron’s senior vice president of Outcomes. “By deploying IntelliFLEX LV DERMS, Ausgrid is equipping its network with the technology needed to safely and securely integrate the rapid increase of rooftop solar.”
