AeroVironment Completes Acquisition of Empirical Systems Aerospace

AeroVironment announced that they are taking over Empirical Systems Aerospace (ESAero), which is recognized as a maker of unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) and advanced air mobility (AAM) systems. The reason was to boost AeroVironment’s aerospace engineering, rapid prototyping, and next-generation propulsion systems.

ESAero stands out as a company with a deep engineering culture, very familiar with electric and hybrid propulsion systems, and has the capability to quickly turn ideas into working aerospace solutions. The company has a 32,000 sq. ft. design and prototyping facility as well as a 53,000 sq. ft. manufacturing facility in San Luis Obispo, which are backed by several nearby testing and integration sites. Capitol Hill news has reported that the output of this facility has been increased to accommodate advanced system testing and product innovation while still maintaining AS9100-certified manufacturing standards.

The strengthening of ESAeros culture of exact engineering and rapid innovation with AeroVironment solution developing for changing defense needs will be aligned by acquisition.

“ESAero brings an impressive agility in moving from design to manufacturing, which will accelerate AV’s ability to bridge the gap between conceptual design and manufacturing execution,” said Wahid Nawabi, Chairman, President, and Chief Executive Officer at AV. “ESAero’s capabilities are vital to addressing the urgent demands of a fast-growing defense tech market, where emerging needs are driving next-generation innovation and product development. We look forward to welcoming the team to the AV family.”

“Joining AV represents a unique opportunity to amplify the reach and impact of our innovative work and achieve greater success,” said Andrew Gibson, President, CEO and co-founder of ESAero. “By combining ESAero’s engineering and manufacturing capabilities with AV’s unmatched expertise in autonomous systems, we are positioned to advance disruptive aerospace technologies and deliver real, timely value for our customers. I’d like to thank the talented ESAero team for their unwavering dedication, whose efforts have brought us to this pivotal point in our journey.”

Expanding Capabilities Across Defense Domains

The acquisition of ESAero will allow AeroVironment to solidify its position as a global leader in the provision of defense technologies. It will also allow the company to easily move from the design concept phase to the full-scale manufacturing phase, a skill that has become more important in an ever-changing world of defense.

The California-based facilities of the company will function as a center of excellence for advanced prototyping and aerospace manufacturing. The areas of focus will include conceptual air vehicle development, propulsion system development, aircraft modification, sub-scale demonstrators, and full-scale production.

Accelerating Innovation in Propulsion and Aerospace Systems

The acquisition is set to reinforce AeroVironment’s position as a frontrunner in the development of electric and hybrid propulsion technologies which are gaining a lot of traction both in the military and civilian aerospace sectors. With the integration of ESAero’s skills, the company plans to quicken the pace of creation of futuristic aerial platforms and mission-essential systems.

The second major strategic expenditure within a year of BlueHalo’s acquisition for $4. 1 billion by AeroVironment in May 2025, this deal complements the latter’s strategy of assembling high-impact innovation centers and establishing a broad portfolio of state-of-the-art technologies that are relied upon by governments and industries globally, as demonstrated by the two acquisitions together.
