GeologicAI Expands Critical Minerals Capabilities with Acquisition of Lumo Analytics

GeologicAI, a global leader in High-Resolution Decision Engineering for the critical minerals sector, has completed the strategic acquisition of Lumo Analytics, a company renowned for its compact and high-performance Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) scanner. This acquisition strengthens GeologicAI’s sensor suite, enhancing its ability to deliver rapid, detailed geochemical data across critical and rare earth elements.

LIBS technology applies a high-energy laser pulse to vaporize a minute portion of rock, producing a plasma whose emitted light reveals a unique elemental “fingerprint.” This rapid, non-destructive process provides immediate chemical insights, enabling mining and exploration teams to gain faster, on-site geochemical understanding.

The addition of Lumo Analytics’ technology significantly broadens GeologicAI’s Resource Knowledge Systems (RKS), extending detection capabilities to rare earth elements (REEs), light elements, and other key constituents. This completes GeologicAI’s integrated, on-site sensor offering, linking high-resolution data with advanced decision modeling demanded by today’s resource decision-makers.

Strategic Advancement in Sensor Integration

“The mining industry currently faces a ’critical minerals crisis’, requiring faster and more accurate data to bring resources to market,” said Grant Sanden, CEO of GeologicAI. “To address this, we are driving a strategy of bringing together enhanced data at the source, industry-specific domain expertise, and advanced, purpose-built analytics. This acquisition represents a key step forward in our mission.”

Steve Buckley, Senior Vice President of Engineering at GeologicAI and a long-time leader in LIBS development, emphasized the operational and technological value added through the acquisition:

“Lumo Analytics has built the most compact and efficient LIBS scanner available in the market. Battle-tested in the field, it provides unparalleled insight at speed. We are excited for both their team and technology to join our drive for High-Resolution Decision Engineering in the critical minerals industry.”

Extending the Potential of LIBS Technology

Antti Kotanen, co-founder and CEO of Lumo Analytics, commented on the future scope of the integration: “Capable of rapid, non-contact, non-destructive measurements, LIBS is taking off in the mining industry as a means of measuring light elements and rare-earth elements (REEs), allowing assessment of crucial deposits and providing detailed mineralogy,” said Antti Kotanen, co-founder and CEO of Lumo Analytics. “We are very proud of what we have built and excited, by joining with GeologicAI, to extend the reach and impact of our technology to the whole industry”.

LIBS fills a crucial analytical role by targeting elemental data that many conventional tools miss. When combined with GeologicAI’s established multi-sensor stack and AI-driven modeling, the extended capabilities unlock deeper mineral mapping, improved resource insights, and better decision-making outcomes.

Industry Support and Seamless Transition

Industry leaders underscore the importance of real-time geological data as global demand for critical minerals continues to accelerate.

“As demand for critical minerals continues to grow, access to high-resolution, real-time geological data is becoming essential to improving decision quality and reducing risk,” said Pekka Santasalo, Head of Growth & Ventures at Rio Tinto. “The combination of GeologicAI’s multi-sensor platform with Lumo Analytics’ LIBS technology represents an important step forward in how the industry can better understand complex ore bodies and make more informed resource decisions.”

GeologicAI and Lumo Analytics say the acquisition fits well with their goals and skills. Customers from both organizations will continue to receive service and support. They can also expect ongoing investment in Lumo’s innovative LIBS technology.
