Kimbal and MicroEJ Partner on Smart Meters for Global Expansion

MicroEJ has announced a strategic partnership with Kimbal to power the energy-tech company’s new on-device software platform, Kimbal EI (Edge Intelligence), using MicroEJ VEE Energy™, enabling a next-generation app ecosystem designed to accelerate the shift toward distributed intelligence in smart meters. As Kimbal supports India’s massive rollout of 250 million smart metering endpoints by 2028 and ships nearly 10 million units annually, the launch of Kimbal EI marks a major transition to a modular, software-defined architecture capable of supporting AI-driven services for utilities and consumers. By decoupling software from hardware, Kimbal is enhancing flexibility, reducing complexity, and enabling rapid feature deployment across devices ranging from 16-bit microcontrollers to 64-bit processors, helping lower total cost of ownership and speed innovation aligned with AMI 2.0 objectives.

The platform also strengthens Kimbal’s global expansion into advanced energy markets, supporting applications such as predictive maintenance, NILM, DER integration, and grid-edge analytics. “MicroEJ VEE will deliver agility to bring edge intelligence to our customers, in particular distributed intelligence for behind-the-meter services and to accelerate customers’ investments in new energy applications,” said Dave Lee, CTO of Kimbal. Ayush Sinhal, CEO of Kimbal, added, “By choosing MicroEJ for our Kimbal EI platform, we are taking a decisive step toward building programmable meters that are intelligent, adaptable, and scalable across a wide range of markets.”
