Microchip Launches Gigabit Ethernet Switches for Industrial Applications

Microchip Technology announced the release of its next-generation LAN9645xF and LAN9645xS Gigabit Ethernet Switches, delivering flexible multi-port configurations and advanced networking features to meet the needs of industrial, aerospace, defense, and data center applications.

The LAN9645xF/S family is available in 5-, 7-, and 9-port options, with up to five integrated 10/100/1000BASE-T PHYs, giving designers the ability to tailor network solutions to their application requirements. These switches can operate as stand-alone unmanaged systems or in managed mode with full Linux® Distributed Switch Architecture (DSA) support, offering customers scalability and control.

The LAN9645xF variant is built for high-performance environments, supporting Time-Sensitive Networking (TSN) and Audio Video Bridging (AVB) when operating in managed mode. It also incorporates hardware-assisted redundancy compliant with the IEC 62439-3 standard for Parallel Redundancy Protocol (PRP) and High-availability Seamless Redundancy (HSR), ensuring seamless failover and zero packet loss during network disruptions. In comparison, the LAN9645xS device is designed as a cost-optimized unmanaged switch, with standard Ethernet switching and limited Precision Time Protocol (PTP) support for basic industrial networking needs.

“Our LAN9645xF/S devices help our customers lower their system costs while implementing advanced TSN and redundancy features by combining many features into a single solution,” said Charlie Forni, corporate vice president of Microchip’s networking and communications business unit. “We back our products with global technical support and a full suite of development tools to make it easier for our customers to design and deploy their industrial networks.”

The new LAN9645xF/S switches deliver robust and adaptable networking solutions that support the demanding requirements of industrial Ethernet, while also addressing the needs of aerospace, defense, data center, and sustainability-focused applications. Seamless integration with Microchip’s broader ecosystem of MCUs, memory, and timing solutions enables customers to build reliable, scalable, and future-ready networks optimized for performance in mission-critical environments.
