Microchip Unveils GNSSDO Modules with Integrated Atomic Clock Technology

Microchip Technology announced the launch of its expanded portfolio of GNSS Disciplined Oscillator (GNSSDO) Modules, integrating the company’s trusted embedded atomic clock and oscillator technologies, including the Chip-Scale Atomic Clock (CSAC), Miniature Atomic Clock (MAC), and Oven-Controlled Quartz Crystal Oscillators (OCXOs).

The new GNSSDO modules deliver precise timing, exceptional stability, and reliable holdover performance, enabling mission-critical Positioning, Navigation, and Timing (PNT) applications. Designed to process reference signals from GNSS or an alternate clock source, the modules discipline onboard oscillators to maintain accuracy across diverse environments.

These solutions are optimized for military and defense applications, including radar, satellite communications (SATCOM), mounted and dismounted radios, vehicle platforms, and GNSS-denied scenarios where reliable timing is essential.

“Microchip’s expertise in PNT systems is instrumental in helping our customers seamlessly integrate these GNSSDO modules into their designs,” said Randy Brudzinski, corporate vice president of Microchip’s frequency and time systems business unit. “Our products can be adjusted to meet the specific requirements of each application, whether it is through a custom solution or incremental changes to the standard product. We provide an end-to-end solution to streamline the development process.”

New GNSSDO Modules

  • MD-013 ULTRA CLEAN – Microchip’s highest-performance GNSSDO module, supporting multiple constellations including GPS, Galileo, BeiDou, and NavIC, or an external reference input. Built on a high-performance OCXO, it delivers ultra-low phase noise (−119 dBc/Hz at 1 Hz offset) and superior frequency stability. Outputs include 1 PPS TTL, 10 MHz sine wave, and 10 MHz square wave, disciplined to a 72-channel single-band GNSS receiver, with upgrade options for dual-band, multi-GNSS.

  • MD-300 – A rugged, compact GNSSDO module (1.5 × 2.5 inches) engineered for harsh environments with embedded MEMS OCXO or TCXO. Its low g-sensitivity and high shock/vibration tolerance make it ideal for drones, manpacks, and mobile defense platforms. The MD-300 delivers disciplined 10 MHz and 1 PPS outputs from either an embedded GNSS receiver or external reference.

  • LM-010 – Designed for Low Earth Orbit (LEO) applications requiring radiation tolerance and dependable holdover. This PPS-disciplined module provides 1 PPS TTL and 10 MHz sinewave outputs synchronized to an external reference. It incorporates Microchip’s digitally corrected OCXO or the low-power CSAC SA.45 for precision timing in spaceborne systems.

Streamlined Integration and Control

All GNSSDO modules are built with Microchip-manufactured oscillators and integrate additional components such as 32-bit microcontrollers (MCUs) and SmartFusion® 2 FPGAs, ensuring trusted reliability. Modules also feature a common serial communication protocol and Graphical User Interface (GUI) for simplified configuration. Parameters such as inputs, outputs, auto-switching, holdover performance, GNSS tracking, and reporting can all be easily managed through the software.
