Developments In Construction Industry To Boost Gypsum-Fiber Board Sector

Industrialization and urbanization is reaching a peak in recent years, which leads to a surge in demand for developments in the construction industry. With adaptation of advanced technologies, construction sectors have developed new improved materials to provide ease in construction as well as to be cost effective. Gypsum- fiber boards are a result of such innovation in construction materials.

Gypsum-Fiber Boards utilized to enhance construction of inner walls and to be a more effective substitute of the conventional plasterboard. These boards are low in cost, light weight and have a smoother surface. It also offers a nice and smooth touch on the edge joints between the boards and is widely used in residential as well as commercial building construction.

What Is a Gypsum-Fiber Board ?

Gypsum is a soft sulfate mineral composed of calcium sulfate dihydrate. It has various applications including as a fertilizer, pharmaceutical and food additive, in architectural and sculpture applications. It is mainly used as construction material often known as Gypsum-Fiber Board.

Gypsum fiber boards are made of gypsum and recycled paper fibers. These two natural raw materials are mixed with water, without adding any other binders. The gypsum reacts with water, penetrating and enveloping fibers. This produces high stability and noncombustibility.

This mixture is then pressed into stable boards under high pressure, dried and coated with a water repellent. These boards are then cut into the required sizes. Its material composition is suitable for utilizing in general construction, fire protection, and wet rooms.

Fiber Cement Board Vs. Gypsum Fiber Board

Gypsum-fiber board and fiber cement board have main similar features such as good insulation, fire resistant, non-causing, and toxic substances. Although, there are certain differences between these two types of construction materials as discussed below.

  • Fiber cement board is a composite material made of cement reinforced with cellulose fibers. These boards are heavier and require to be installed by professionals using special cutting tools.
  • Whereas, Gypsum fiber board is a panel made of gypsum plaster pressed between two thick sheets of paper. Gypsum boards are easy to cut and install and can be used as a final coat. It helps to enhance the architectural structure and balance the indoor atmospheric conditions.

Types Of Gypsum-Fiber Boards

There are several types of gypsum-fiber board available in the market and some of them are as follows.

1. Fire Resistant Gypsum boards

The fire resistant Gypsum boards offer good resistance to fire due to which they can be also used in fire-prone areas. These boards are suitable in ceilings and drywall where a high level of fire protection is required.

2. Standard Gypsum Boards

The standard gypsum fiber boards are the most common and widely used gypsum boards for false ceilings. This type of board comes with ivory cardboard on its facing surface.

3. Moisture Resistant Gypsum Boards

These types of boards are used as a covering material in the interior of the walls. Moisture resistant gypsum boards have wide applications in residential and commercial buildings where moisture protection is one of the necessities. It is also utilized as a wall tile in the walls of bathrooms and other areas that are subjected to moisture.

4. Backing Gypsum Board

It is used in the construction work where several layers of the gypsum boards are used as a soundproofing material and which also provides strength and fire resistance to the walls. The backing gypsum boards are utilized for the walls and ceilings and self-leveling screeds.

5. Impact-Resistant Gypsum Panels

The standard, regular type of gypsum fiber panels does not have resistance to the impact loads which makes them less durable. The Impact resistant gypsum fiber panels are the special type of panels that offer great resistance to the impact loads.

The Future Scope Of Gypsum-Fiber Board

The gypsum-fiber board is going to be a key material in the construction industry. It has various properties such as good thermal properties which helps to balance indoor humidity and temperature. It is also an energy-efficient building material that is used to insulate the rooms and reduce energy consumption.

These can be used as per requirements which make it possible to create unique structural designs and can be used for any type of construction work. Furthermore, with on going research on developing better materials, it will provide gypsum fiber boards with more

properties and workability which will blend modern age technology and architectural advancements.
