Chemours announces the development of a new specialty fluid for two-phase immersion cooling: Opteon™ 2P50

The Chemours Company, a global chemical company with leading market positions in Titanium Technologies, Thermal & Specialized Solutions and Advanced Performance Materials, recently announced significant achievements in the development and manufacture of Opteon 2P50 known. This is a new heat transfer fluid for two-phase immersion cooling (2-PIC). The proprietary fluid is currently in the final testing phase for manufacturability, with initial commercialization planned for 2025 pending appropriate regulatory approvals. Chemours Opteon™ 2P50 is a proprietary hydrofluoroolefin (HFO) dielectric. It was developed to meet the growing demand for high-performance products, that reduce the environmental impact and at the same time are suitable for the circular economy. Opteon™ 2P50 has zero Ozone Depletion Potential (ODP) and a significantly lower Global Warming Potential (GWP) than conventional fluids.

The launch of Chemours’ Opteon™ 2P50 is a critical step in preparing the company for the growing challenge of a new era of data communications. This new era is driving a dramatic increase in demand for faster computing, AI capabilities, and other cutting-edge applications whose underlying technologies require higher cooling performance. Chemours’ new 2-PIC fluid enables high-performance computing and energy-efficient cooling in a wide range of thermal management applications.

Globally, data centers are currently responsible for about 1% of carbon emissions and about 1 to 1.5% of electricity consumption. More than 95% of data centers use traditional air and water cooling technologies. In terms of energy and water consumption, 2-PIC is the most sustainable, cost-effective and efficient alternative to traditional air-cooled data centers. By immersing electronic devices directly in a dielectric liquid, they can be efficiently and safely cooled without the risk of damaging the hardware. Customer testing of Chemours Opteon™ 2P50 has confirmed excellent performance.

2-PIC can reduce energy consumption for data center cooling by more than 90% and nearly eliminate water consumption, reducing operational costs. In addition, 2-PIC’s simplified cooling structure helps reduce capital expenditures. It can reduce the physical footprint of the data center by up to 60% while ensuring optimal cooling capabilities to support next-generation, high-performance computing applications. The ability to recover and reuse the two-phase scuba fluid also paves the way to a circular economy.
