FirstElement Fuel Partners with Hyundai Motor for Hydrogen Refueling of Class 8 Fuel Cell Electric Trucks Capable of Over 40,000 Emission-Free Miles

FirstElement Fuel, the world’s leading provider of hydrogen fueling solutions, and Hyundai Motor Company, a leader in the development of Class 8 fuel cell electric trucks, have partnered to fuel and test heavy-duty trucks at XCIENT fuel cell from Hyundai Motor in California. Through this partnership, FirstElement Fuel leverages its network of True Zero hydrogen fueling stations to fuel three prototype XCIENT fuel cells at full pressure of 700 bar. Additionally, FirstElement Fuel is deploying its first high-capacity mobile refueler, which was developed through a collaboration between FirstElement Fuel, Taylor-Wharton and Nikkiso. The mobile refueler, with a high refueling capacity of 125 kilograms per hour,

FirstElement Fuel Class A licensed drivers drive three Hyundai Motor XCIENT fuel cell trucks on California roads, covering more than 40,000 emission-free miles. FirstElement has performed more than 120 hydrogen refuelings for XCIENT fuel cell trucks under this program. FirstElement is unique in that it offers the world’s largest network of hydrogen stations powered by liquid rather than gaseous hydrogen. The distribution and storage of liquid hydrogen is much more efficient, effectively powering Class 8 fuel cell electric trucks.

Later this year, FirstElement Fuel and Hyundai Motor will launch the largest commercial deployment of Class 8 hydrogen fuel cell trucks in Oakland, California. The project, titled NorCAL ZERO, was jointly funded by the California Energy Commission (CEC) and the California Air Resources Board (CARB) and is managed by the Center for Transportation and the Environment (CTE).

The hydrogen refueling partnership between FirstElement Fuel and Hyundai Motor provides valuable data and insights that help inform design considerations for the NorCal ZERO project. FirstElement Fuel views the partnership with Hyundai Motor as a truly successful one step towards the overall goal of advancing hydrogen as a replacement for fossil fuels.
