Choosing a right hair cutting tool is necessary in order to provide a good cut, maintain healthy hair and choosing the wrong professional hair cutting scissors blade edge can also affect a stylist’s performance in so many ways.

What Are Hair Scissors?

Hair-cutting scissors, often known as barber shears or hairdressing shears, are scissors that are specifically designed for cutting hair. This kind of shears range in size from about 5 to 7 inches i.e. 13 to 18 cm long and commonly have an appendage, called a finger brace or tang, attached to one of the finger rings. This brace provides the user additional control when cutting hair.

The price of hair scissors mainly depends on the quality of the materials used and hair shear blade edges. The most common materials used for manufacturing hair scissors include stainless steel alloy, cobalt base alloy, carbide steel, titan or titanium coating and others. The quality of hair and hair growth is affected by hair cutting techniques and tools, so it is important that a barber or hairdresser should use high quality scissors.

Hair scissor types

There are several types of hair cutting scissors available in the market. Each scissor is designed for a distinct purpose or hair cutting techniques and to offer additional comfort. Most commonly used types of hair cutting scissors are as follows.

1. Short blades

Short blade scissors are ideal for hairdressers with smaller hands. These types of scissors are more lightweight, easy to control and usually have between 4- to 5.5- inch blades.

2. Long blades

Long-bladed scissors are commonly referred to as barber scissors. This type usually has a range between 6- to 7-inches long. Long blade scissors are great for covering larger surface areas and making long, precise cuts.

3. Blending and thinning scissors

Blending and thinning scissors are very similar. Blending scissors have one solid blade and one with teeth, which makes them superior for creating a smooth finish. Whereas, thinning scissors, have teeth on both blades, which makes them perfect for reducing thickness evenly.

Thinning scissors are further subdivided into wide-tooth thinning scissors or chunking shears that are designed to remove larger sections of hair and produce an ultra-textured look.

And texturizing shears, that have more space between their teeth than thinning shears, which enables them to remove more hair at once. These are used to create shape and movement in hair cuts.

4. Swivel and offset scissors

The swivel scissors are a must-have for hairdressers concerned about hand and wrist pain. These are designed with a thumb ring that can adjust to accommodate a natural hand position. This helps to reduce pain and discomfort from spending long hairs cutting hair.

offset scissors are designed for your thumb to rest in a more natural position. It is very similar to swivel scissors but has additional comfort which reduces strain on the hairdresser’s hand and wrist.

5. Left-handed

The left-handed scissors enable barbers and hairdressers to squeeze the scissors shut naturally, without bending or crimping the hair. The blades of left handed scissors are reversed, which allows the hairdresser to see the cutting edge of the hair.

Types Of Scissor handles

There are three main types of scissor handles depending on its shape that offer unique benefits and uses, as discussed below.

  • Crane scissors are designed with a straight blade and a thumb ring that angles downward, such shear handles help to reduce hand fatigue.

  • Offset scissors have slightly angled handles so the top and bottom rings aren’t symmetrical. This design is considered to be more comfortable than classic shears because they allow hand movements easily.

  • Classic or straight scissor handles have stacked upper and lower rings. This handle is flat and level. While using them, the finger and thumb will line up with one another.

There are many factors to consider before choosing a hair cutting scissor,  you can use either tool to reduce bulk, create soft lines, and add texture. With more revolutions in the fashion industry, there will be new unique haircut ideas that require unique hair cutting tools. Due to this the hair scissor manufacturers are willing to develop improved and cost effect hair shears.
